blue transferware plate in the Columbia pattern

this pattern was first introduced by the predecessor Clementson, Young & Jameson

Much of the ware produced by Clementson, Young & Jameson and Clementson & Young was made for the American market and carries names such as Columbia and Washington even though the patterns are generic 'oriental' style and not American scenes.

a number of manufacturers, including the Clementson partnerships, William Adams & Sons, John & William Ridgway and John Wedg Wood produced stylised or romantic scenes called COLUMBIA

"Columbia is a name with many American connections. It is the name of a river in Washington state, a district which includes the American capital of Washington, and of cities or towns in Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Missouri" - The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery 1780-1880, Coysh & Henrywood
