Fire Trees -
inspired by the Potteries bottle kilns
one of the first Performance Art in
ceramics
"I am a potter and originally from India (Bombay, actually) but at the moment I live in Japan. My connection with Stoke-on-Trent is that I lived there for a while during my time at Keele University. (1974-78). I lived off campus first in Milton and then in Campbell Rd. (I hear Stoke City FC has got a brand new stadium since then!) Other things about Stoke that I remember - Victoria Theatre, Fight for Shelton Bar, The D Road, Gladstone Pottery Museum, Forest Park, Marstons, Sneyd Arms, Neck End........." Wali Hawes
"Now, is anybody going to tell me that Bottle Ovens aren't sculptural? Does function deny sculpture?" |
Four fire trees ready for firing
- the similarity with the bottle
kilns can be seen -
photo is
from 1987 and is a work presented at L`H Art in L`Hospitalet, Barcelona
and organized by The Centre D`Art Alexandre Cirici.
It still retains the very obvious connection with the Bottle Ovens except it
has fireboxes because it is wood-fired.
This
fire tree shows
its 'tree like' characteristics
this image show a progression towards a more sculptural intent
