Cemetery rules and regulations in 1907

 

Between 1884 and 1910 the cemetery was run by Stoke-upon-Trent Corporation. 

The rules and regulations for the cemetery at Hartshill are from the Staffordshire Sentinel, Potteries, Newcastle & District Directory, 1907. 

In 1910 the cemetery came under the jurisdiction of the federated borough of Stoke-on-Trent.

 

 

CEMETERY.

The Stoke-upon-Trent Borough Cemetery is situated at Hartshill, and is open to the public on weekdays from 8 a.m. to sunset, on Sundays from 12 o’clock to sunset. It covers an area of 26˝ acres, and the times of burial are as follows :-

Church of England and Roman Catholic funerals at 3 p.m.; Nonconformists &c., at 3 30 p.m.

Thirty-six hours’ previous notice at the least must be given to the Registrar previous to any interment. If the interment be fixed for a Sunday, notice thereof must be given before 12 o’clock on the previous Friday. Three clear days’ notice must he given if a vault or bricked grave be required. Sunday interments will be allowed only in cases of emergency, such as arising from contagious disease. In all such cases the certificate of the medical attendant, stating the reason for emergency, must be provided to the Registrar.

The notice of interment must be in the form provided by the Board, and must contain a statement of the Christian and surname, the calling or description, and the age of the person to be buried; the date of the death; the street or place and parish in which it occurred; the day and hour of the intended burial, whether in the consecrated or unconsecrated ground, the situation and description of the grave or vault, whether purchased or not purchased, and the name of the Minister intended to officiate. Certificate of registry of death is to be produced to the officiating minister.

The hours for arrival of funerals, namely, the time when the procession is to be at the gates of the Cemetery, which must be punctually observed, so as to prevent, as far as possible the interference of one funeral with another, must be by the appointment of the Registrar; morning funerals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m:, as may be agreed upon.
