Earthenware & white ironstone manufacturer at Tunstall and then Burslem,  Stoke-on-Trent, England

  • In 1851 John Aubyn May was recorded as operating at John Street Tunstall. (William White directory)

  • By 1856 he was at Hamil Road, Burslem (Kelly directory) where he remained until at least 1861. 

  • John Goddard (agent & exporter) recorded in his diaries purchasing cream-coloured wares and white granite from J. A. May. Also when the business of R. H. Penman (Armitage, Staffordshire) failed in 1856 Goddard recommended that Penman should sell his American-market "Senate" shape moulds to May. (Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone & Granite Ware)

  • The London Gazette (10 July 1866) refers to John Aubyn May as 'late of Burslem, earthenware manufacturer'
